Strange things happen in African churches. We once saw a Tanzania pastor who walks on church members. Now another pastor who goes by the name Lethebo Rabalago, of the Mount Zion General Assembly (MZGA), in Limpopo, South Africa, is spraying people with Doom insect repellent to heal them.

One of the pastor’s online posts was captioned as if quoting a congregant, saying: “I came here with a pain on my back and stomach. Now, after the prophet sprayed me with Doom I am healed. My nose was blocked since last week, but after the prophet sprayed me with Doom I feel coming out of my nose. I thank God for healing me.”

It is questionable why a pastor would decide to spray insecticide into faces of his church members, purporting to heal them of various ailments. More questionable is why the church members would subject themselves to such inhuman treatment in the name of getting spiritual healing from the so-called pastor.

Various news media have tried to reach the pastor for interview or comment on this issue but to no avail. However, in a press statement, the manufacturer of the insect repellent that was used said in a press conference that it found the practice “alarming and extremely concerning” and that it is “unsafe to spray Doom Super Multi Insect killer or any other aerosol spray for that matter, into people’s faces.”
