Well, I guess I’m not the only one who saw it coming? In his campaign, Donald Trump called for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States. A move that was supported by Czech president. Trump made the statement during his campaign but he had no executive power at his disposal to get it implemented.
Trump bans 7 countries
When Trump won the presidential election and got inaugurated, it was crystal clear that he was going to impose a traveling ban on the deeply-rooted Muslim countries. This is due to his firm belief that it will make America more safe.
Trump signed a sweeping executive order which stops the admission of refugees from Syria indefinitely, and bars entry into the United States for 90 days from seven predominantly Muslim countries. The affected countries are: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen.
Iran immediately said that in retaliation, it will ban U.S. citizens from entering it’s country. The following day, Iranian government issued a statement through it’s foreign ministry and the statement reads:
“While respecting the American people and distinguishing between them and the hostile policies of the U.S. government, Iran will implement the principle of reciprocity until the offensive U.S. limitations against Iranian nationals are lifted,”
Trump’s move has also angered one of Iran’s most popular actresses, Taraneh Alidoosti who stars in the Oscar-nominated “The Salesman”. She said she would boycott next month’s Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles.
12,587 Syrian refugees were admitted into the U.S. in 2016. A thing that would have been unthinkable under Donald Trump’s administration.
Some travellers who were already in the air when Trump signed the executive order were detained at the airport, pending their deportation.
Fortunately for the Muslims who were being detained in the US airport prior to the announcement of Trump’s new immigration policy, Judge Ann M. Donnelly of Federal District Court in Brooklyn, who was nominated by former president Barack Obama, blocks the deportations of banned travellers by granting emergency stay to those who have already arrived at U.S airports.
The United Nations responded by urging Trump to continue his country’s “long tradition” of welcoming refugees and to ensure their equal treatment, regardless of race, nationality or religion.
